Low-power wireless sensor/actuator module for WSN applications

The WiSMote is a Sensor Node designed for WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) applications over IEEE 802.15.4 radio, but also optionally PLC and RS-485 communications. The wireless link operates over the 2.4GHz ISM band. A number of on-board sensors and the expansion connectors allows it to monitor a wide range of physical parameters with application domains like environment, healthcare, domotics and smart-building, logistics and other industrial applications.

WiSMote uses the Contiki Operating System, which features a lightweight IPv6 compliant network stack with 6LoWPAN support for use with IEEE 802.15.4 radio.


Here is an overview of the WiSMote architecture:


  • CPU: TI MSP430 series 5 (16 bits) with 16kB internal RAM and 128, 192 or 256kB Flash
  • RF:
    • TI CC2520 2.4GHz IEEE 802.15.4 compatible 6LoWPAN/Zigbee/WirelessHart
    • Internal or external antenna
  • Data log: 1 to 8 MB Flash
  • Expansion connectors:
    • 8 analog inputs
    • 16 digital I/O
    • UART, I2C, Phidgets
  • Embedded sensors:
    • 3-axes accelerometer
    • Light
    • Temperature (analog or digital)
  • Software
    • Contiki Operating System (TinyOS also planned)
    • Free-Software
  • Power:
    • USB
    • AAA batteries or Li-ion (integrated charger)
  • Temperature range: -40°C to +85°C
